What does Yoga Sutra 2.33 mean?

The sutras can be interpreted in many different ways. To me, yoga sutra 2.33 speaks to having a positive mind and outlook on life. Do bad things happen? Yes. Will you sometimes feel sad, overwhelmed, scared, or anger? Yes. But dwelling on those negative feelings and letting them take over your life only brings misery and ignorance.

This is, of course, easier said than done. Being about the take control of those negative feelings takes time and practice. The Happiness Trap is a great book that has several techniques on creating space for negative feelings and not letting them take over your life.

The Happiness Trap is, “A Guide to ACT: the mindfulness-based program for reducing stress, overcoming fear, and creating a rich and meaningful life.”

This book would be extremely helpful for anyone working on creating more positivity in their life. After reading it once, I have committed myself to continue to rereading it at least one more time. It’s that good.

Martha Beck, the author of Finding Your Own North Star says, “This book could save you years of psychological struggle, yank you out of negative emotional patterns, and help propel you to a much happier, more productive life.”

It’s the perfect resource for working on Yoga Sutra 2.33. There is also an illustrated version of The Happiness Trap, as well as a pocketbook version.

More on the Yoga Sutras

The yoga sutras are the principles and basic teachings of yoga. They are broken up into short verses. They are at least 4,000 years old but can still be easily applied to our lives today.
